Look, I know Subaru has a lot of faults and the Forester certainly isn’t the best car around in its segment, but at least you can see out of it. This comparison test between it and the new Compass illustrate everything I hate about modern beltlines. Its not like the Forester is unsafe from the side either. C’mon guys, please don’t build caves.
I mean, one of these you could stick your arm out of and enjoy a nice breeze, the other might make you car sick. Not to mention whats going on behind the c pillar.

My experience with any of these small jeeps has been “wow this interior is NICE! let me try the back seats to see if they are as....ooooh. I see this is where the money ran out.”

As a recent owner of a small CUV, this holds true to every single one of them, the backs seats are always not good.
The front seats in a 3008 similar to mine:

At least the Compass isn’t as bad as the CH-R.

Freakin’ CH-R. The Toyota PT cruiser without the popularity.

Keep making new cars like this please, it’s helping my argument to get a nice upright vehicle with a lot of big windows as our next family rig;

I just don’t know what happened to make being able to see out unfashionable. Even the Tacoma isn’t immune.
I know you know, but Im putting this image up for others. don’t jive that line up? I want to rest my arm there!

Same is true for the Audi Q3. It’s perfect for two people and a dog. Two people with two teenagers, not so much.

Visibility was definitely a big part of the reason that I bought a Forester.

I don’t even hate the way the CH-R looks. But from a practicality standpoint, A.K.A. what most people buy crossovers for, it’s an absolute disaster. Can’t see why someone would buy one unless they’re a hardcore Toyota loyalist who absolutely needs a subcompact crossover.

May I remind you all of the greatness that is the 90s Legacy wagons.
There is virtually no blind spot anywhere on these cars. The C-pillar is the widest thing, and even then, you’d have to be a unicycle two lanes to the left/right in the perfect spot to be completely hidden.
You do pay for this, however. They have no window tint, so they’re giant fishbowls... which means the interior will melt you in the summer.

I will probably buy a Foz like that once I have the cash for it. Finding Legacy wagons is incredibly difficult, but Fozzies like that are much easier to find.

I’ve seen a tweet from an auto designer where they said they think people want cars with high beltlines because they look like sports cars. Also why everybody wants to rock 19” wheels with low-profile tires.

I think they’ve made wheels so big because small wheels look absurd when combined with these ever-rising beltlines.

While you can still do a car with a big greenhouse, rollever rules (good!) have made it hard to do one pillars quite that thin. I’d guess that barely there b-pillar isn’t great in side impact tests either.

It seemed the 90s Legacies were decent in roll-over tests, but pretty crap at side impact (3 stars in the 90s with a “Safety Concern”.)
Subaru seems to have put a lot of engineering effort into making the A- and C- pillars ridiculously strong to compensate, but having no real B-pillar means getting whacked from the side is a death sentence.

It’s cheaper to meet crash standards by adding more material higher up.
Subaru prioritizes sightlines and has engineered very strong structural beams to meet standards while allowing more glass. At least that’s my take on it.
Of course the money runs out else where... Looking at you 20 year old engine architectures.

I’d buy that buy the larger, better equipped forester is the same price, and its not like the “tigershark” engine is a spring chicken with its roots back to 2005.

At what point will people be stuffing their passengers into windowless boxes in the rear of a vehicle?
